Recent acquittal of the monks of Esphigmenou Monastery by the
Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki, shows that “there is still a fair
hope” in Greek justice.

The majority were found innocent by the Court of Appeal of
Thessaloniki six zealot monks of Esphigmenou Monastery on Mount Athos,
who had been convicted of first trial (protodika) incident that
happened with the new fraternity monks in the monastery Konaki at Karyes.

The incident was uncovered in October 2005, when members of the new
brotherhood of Esphigmenou, who was appointed by the Holy Community,
the highest administrative organ of the Athonite State, tried to enter
the Konaki of the Monastery in Karyes, but was hampered by the zealot
monks.

The case took the path of Justice sued after the new brotherhood (the
impostors).

In the first trial court, nine were referred to trial zealot monks who
were sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for the offense of
disruption of household peace. Of all the convicted, the six have
appealed and the case was heard today in the second degree.

The Third Court of Appeal in Thessaloniki on the grounds of today’s
decision found no evidence that the crime of domestic disturbance of
peace but it was about taking the law into their own hands (avtodikia).

The zealot monks did not appear in court and were tried by a lawyer’
representation.
